Background
Egypt is a large country located in north-eastern Africa with its capital located in its largest city, Cairo. Egypt also extends into Asia by virtue of holding the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt is bordered by Israel and the Gaza Strip to the north-east, by Jordan and Saudi Arabia to the east (across the Red Sea), by Sudan to the south and by Libya to the west. The country is bounded by the Mediterranean and Red Seas (to the north and east respectively) and geographically dominated both by the River Nile and its fertile well-watered valley, and by the Eastern and Western deserts.
Egypt (together with its southern neighbour Sudan) is perhaps best known as the home of the ancient Egyptian civilization, with its temples, hieroglyphs, mummies, and - visible above all - its pyramids. Egypt stimulates the imagination of western tourists like few other countries and is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations world-wide.

Egypt Arrival and Departure Procedures
Clearance must be done with Immigration, Customs and Health at an official Port of Entry. A "Sailing Permit" must be obtained from the Port Authority.
The Egyptian Coast Guard is active in all ports and anchorages, and will most often visit the yacht and request details of both the yacht and the crew aboard.
- It is advisable to check in at Port Ghalib if heading north.
Documentation Required
- Port Clearance from your last Port of Call
- Ships Registration Certificate
- VHF Radio Licence
- Insurance Certificate
- Detailed Crew List
- Ship's stamps are always good to have but not essential
N.B.: All the above should be in date (valid) and original copy.
Egypt Immigration
All nationalities, except those from Malta, South Africa, and Arab countries, require a visa.
Tourist visas are issued for up to one month and multiple entry visas can be obtained from Egyptian consulates. Visas are valid for three months from the date of issue and an extension to a visa can be obtained from the local police. No entry is allowed to citizens of Taiwan, Yemen and Libya and Israeli nationals must have a visa obtained in advance from the Egyptian embassy in Israel.
The immigration officials stamp foreign passports with a notice that visitors must register within 7 days - DO NOT forget to register.
Visas are not required by anyone travelling aboard a yacht transiting the Suez Canal (provided they do not leave any port area). Most visitors can obtain a visa on arrival but the formalities are much easier if a visa is obtained in advance (can be obtained in Djibouti if Northbound).
Egypt Customs
- Foreign yachts may stay for up to one year from the date of arrival, after which the yacht needs to leave the country for a period of four months.
- Firearms and ammunition MUST be declared on arrival.
- PETS: The standard International Veterinarian Health Certificate issued by a Licenced Veterinarian (issued not more than 14 days prior to travel) showing pet is healthy, free of parasites and has been vaccinated for Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvirus, Canine Influenza and Rabies.
