The tiny island of Atokos is situated in the so-called Inland Sea, that part of the Ionian Sea in [[Greece]] which is bordered on the W by the islands of [[Lefkas]], [[Kefalonia]] and [[Ithaca]] and on the E by the Greek mainland coast between [[Lefkas]] and the Gulf of [[Patras]].  The island sits in a somewhat windy channel halfway between [[Ithaca]] five miles W and the island of [[Kastos]] roughly the same distance to the NE.  The island rises like an extinct volcano (which it may well be) from the ocean bed and is mostly rocky and steep-to around its coasts.  There is one bay on the SE side, popularly known as One House Bay, which is the only suitable anchorage for an overnight stop – and that in settled weather only.  There are no facilities on the island whatsoever.

If you are looking for a day-stay for lunch and an exceptional snorkeling (and scuba) experience, the Cliff Bay on the SSE side is the place you will remember for a long time. The east side of Cliff Bay is unspoiled, often very little visited, exceptional clear water with turquoise water over large spots of fine sandy seabed. Go as close as possible due to anchoring depth. This is not a over-night anchorage.

The tiny island of Atokos is situated in the so-called Inland Sea, that part of the Ionian Sea in Greece which is bordered on the W by the islands of Lefkas, Kefalonia and Ithaca and on the E by the Greek mainland coast between Lefkas and the Gulf of Patras. The island sits in a somewhat windy channel halfway between Ithaca five miles W and the island of Kastos roughly the same distance to the NE.

Weather

Approach and Navigation

All the approaches to the island are straightforward, but be prepared for some gusting in the prevailing NW winds when nearing it, as the winds tend to swirl around and over the top. Shelter in the anchorage is acceptable in the prevailing W/NW winds unless they rise much above F5, when it gets uncomfortable here with the gusts. There is no protection from any other direction, especially easterlies.

Anchorages

One House Bay

The bay lies just inside the headland at the SE tip of the island and consists of a small cove with a beach at its head and a few prominent rocks at its S end. Depths are 15-20 metres in the entrance but it is possible (assuming the anchorage is not full) to find depths of 6.0 – 7.0 metres further in, about 50 metres off the beach. Holding is good in sand and weed with a few rocks. The shelter in this position is good enough to stay overnight in the usual F3-4 NW seabreeze, although there are gusts until the winds die down in the evening. The water is crystal clear and perfect for snorkelling – especially in the late evening and early morning when there is no seabreeze. Ashore there is a small house and a tiny chapel but little else.

Offshore Islands

Things to do Ashore

Tourism

Really nothing and best kept that way.

Grocery & Supply Stores

No supplies at all.

Eateries

None, nor ever likely to be.

Garbage Disposal

Do please take it with you. Some yacht-borne morons don’t and it just festers on the beach.

Transportation

None.

Personal Notes

Personal experiences?

  • A delightful spot – especially outside the busy season – but to be avoided with anything above F4 in the forecast and definitely with anything other than W/NW winds. Athene of Lymington
