'''Brussels''' is a city of contrasts. Modern life tries to go on despite the limitations of the mediaeval architecture, in many cases bereft of properly installed utilities. While protecting notable buildings is virtuous it seems that Brussels has gone too far, and large sections lie in dilapidated condition unable to be modernized due to cloying regulations.

Brussels is a city of contrasts.

It is also cartoon city, with excellent street art being an acknowledgement that this is, after all, the home of both René Magritte and TinTin.

African immigrants stand on street corners, unemployed and waiting for who knows what, a legacy of Belgian colonization in their homelands. The pianist you saw at a blues bar on Monday is begging for a meal in the city square on Wednesday. The clone-like shaven-headed Moroccan youth periodically go on rampages of destruction, protesting nothing in particular.

Thank goodness they make great beer.

Cruising the region

Well OK, I've lived in Brussels and it's a long way from the ocean. Checking the map tells me that it can be reached by the internal waterways that traverse Europe, but since they have bridges you may need a yacht with a folding mast in a tabernacle, and you may have to run under power the whole way from the coast unless you want to be raising and lowering it all the time.

But yeah, it can be done.
