The entry to the Rio Piedras should only be attempted on a rising tide, preferably close to high water, when the depths at the mouth range from 3.0 to 4.7 metres, depending on the tides.  A red and white buoy marks the best water at the entrance.  Entry should not be attempted in strong onshore winds.  The river channel is constantly shifting, and the buoyage is changed several times a year to reflect the variations.  Follow the buoyed channel up to the marina of El Rompido, which is situated in the river 4.5 miles upstream from the entrance and connected to the north bank of the river by a long jetty.

Marina El Rompido is constructed using a system of piles to secure its six long pontoons in the riverbed. The marina is situated almost in the centre of the river and connected to the shore via a long jetty. Since the tides can run at up to 2.0 knots on the ebb, berthing here can call for a degree of skill when the currents are strong. Marina staff will assist if necessary. The marina has a total of 331 berths for yachts up to 30 metres and with a maximum draft of 3.5 metres. Electricity is available on the pontoons. Toilets and showers on land.  WiFi. Fuel station. Good security (24 hour).

Moorings in the Rio Piedras

El Rompido is a small village, now developed into a holiday centre, on the north bank of the Rio Piedras, which enters the sea 16 miles east of the Spanish/Portuguese border. The river estuary is relatively shallow and not to be attempted at low water or with any onshore winds. However, it is a very beautiful and peaceful area and the trip upriver to the Marina El Rompido is rewarded with wonderful views of the dunes and wildlife of the sandy peninsula protecting the river.

Marina El Rompido is constructed using a system of piles to secure its six long pontoons in the riverbed, with added protection from tyre wave breaks. The marina is situated on the north side of the river near the lighthouse and connected to the shore via a long jetty. Since the tides can run at up to 2.0 knots on the ebb, berthing here can call for a degree of skill when the currents are strong, but the visitors' berths are on the T's facing the ebb. Marineros are always on hand and arrive quickly on bikes, to assist. Alternatively anchor nearby or use the long outer pontoon temporarily, and wait for slack water. Multihulls should proceed right round to the long shallow inside pontoon where there is plenty of room, and where they will pay only mono rates. The marina has a total of 331 berths for yachts up to 30 metres and with a maximum draft of 3.5 metres. Electricity and water on the pontoons. Toilets and showers on land. Laundry Services. WiFi. Fuel station just east of marina. Good security (24 hour). Shopping area & supermarket.
