The harbour of Grscica from SW

The small harbour of Grscica lies on the S coast of the island of Korcula in Croatia, six miles E of the SW tip of the island and a mile W of the harbour of Prizba Mali. The inlet in which it sits is partially protected from SW by the sickle-shaped islet of Kosor half a mile offshore. There is not a lot of space in Grscica, which is popular with leisure fishermen, and careful navigation is needed as there is a rocky and unmarked shoal patch in the middle of the harbour. In settled weather, however, it is a peaceful and unfrequented port of call when sailing along the S coast of Korcula Island.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Navigation

There are islets and shoal patches just off the coast both to the E and W of Grscica and careful attention to the chart is needed on the approach. Note that there are shoal patches on both the N and SE sides of O. Kotor, the sickle-shaped island SW of Grscica bay.

Entrance

Vela Luka is the nearest year-round port of entry.

Berthing

The quay in the small harbour of Grscica

The best berth for a visiting yacht is on the quay immediately NW of the slipway and the conspicuous white crane on the E side of the harbour. There are a couple of small craft moorings here, but it is possible with care for 2-3 yachts to anchor and take a line to the quay. Be careful to approach the quay close in along the NW shore of the inlet to avoid the rocky shoal patch with just over a metre depths which lies around 75 metres SW of the quay. Depths at the quay itself are 4.0 - 5.0 metres. The holding is good in sand and weed (as long as you avoid the rocky patch!). Shelter in the harbour is good except with anything S in the wind. Grscica is completely open SW.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

In settled conditions, it is possible to anchor in the little cove on the N side of the inlet, 200 metres W of the quay, in depths of 5.0 - 6.0 metres, with a line ashore. Holding is good in sand and weed. Shelter is adequate in moderate winds but the anchorage is open to anything S in the wind.
