Green Turtle Cay (Port of entry)

Green Turtle Cay is located in the "Abaco Out Islands" and is 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1/2 mile wide. It was named after the abundance of green turtles that inhabited the area. The population of the island is about 450 and its main settlement is New Plymouth which was founded in the 18th century.
A very popular cruiser's stop-over.
Green Turtle Cay is known for its excellent beaches and has several boat marinas. It also contains a museum featuring the paintings of noted Bahamian painter Alton Lowe.

The Abacos has an informally organized local VHF channel specifically designed to help yachtsmen who are not totally familiar with The Abacos' waters. Since many local and cruising yachtsmen standby on VHF 68, a convenient source of "local knowledge" or help in an emergency. Additionally, at 8:15 AM, the Abacos' most accurate local weather and sea conditions forecast is available. Medical and rescue help (through Bahamas Air Sea Rescue) stands by on VHF 83 out of Treasure Cay.
The Network begins its day at 8:15 each morning and continues for just over an hour. Weather reports are given, cruiser news and information is exchanged, newcomers and returnees welcomed to the area and those departing for stays elsewhere are bid a fond farewell. Advertisements for restaurants, bars and community events are announced free of charge and there is a special segment called the "open mike" which invites comments and advice from anyone in the area who can tune in to VHF 68.
Although you may not be able to receive the local CruisersNet from central Abaco on VHF 68 at 8:15 am, you can get it on a delayed basis on the internet

- Have an elegant meal at the Bluff House, or go to the Jolly Roger for drinks and simpler fare. Check to see if the Gully Roosters band will be playing. Great fun.
- Dinner at drinks at the Green Turtle Club also in White Sound.
- Tour New Plymouth, an 18th century Loyalist town with restaurants, shops, museums, etc.

Personal Notes
- Two nice totally protected harbors and a delightful town. Very quiet in comparison to the towns and cays on the other side of "The Whale". Rent a golf cart to get to the ocean beach, the marinas and their restaurants, and New Plymouth.
