The small island of Kakan lies off the mainland coast of Croatia eight miles W of the harbour of Sibenik. The island is situated halfway between the larger islands of Kaprije to the E and Zirje to the SW. Although uninhabited, the island is a popular destination for cruising yachtsmen and day boats from Kaprije in view of its attractive and sheltered anchorage of U. Potkucina on its N side, which is protected by two small islets. Shelter is good in all conditions except very strong N winds.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

The anchorage is situated on the N side of the island, barely a mile W of the island of Kaprije and consists of a wide and relatively shallow bay partially protected from N by the islets of O. Burnjak Veli and O. Burnjak Mali. Depths in the anchorage range from 5.0 metres in the channel between the two islets to 15.0 metres in the center of the bay. The channel between O. Burnjak Veli, the westernmost of the two islets, and Kakan is shallow, with depths of 2.0 - 2.5 metres only. Anchor according to the wind direction in depths of 5.0 - 8.0 metres. The holding is good in sand and weed. Alternatively pick up one of the mooring buoys that are sometimes laid here during the summer.

• We dropped the anchor in Potkucina far away from the mooring buoys, as we were encouraged by one German sailor who did it two nights before, and the local “mooring buoy mafia” became crazy. After several visits, discussions and threats to cut our anchor at night we checked with the harbour master and were advised to move, as there had been problems before with masked men arriving in the night to scare off anchored boaters. As the wind was northerly, we made our way to a small cove S of Kaprije bay, although not designated anchorage, very nice place to stay in settled weather and winds from N to E. --Lotos 11:00, 20 August 2014 (BST)
