Harbour of Kraljevica - Click for larger view

The small harbour of Kraljevica lies at the SE end of the Bakarski Zaljev (bay of Bakar), a two-mile long inland basin situated four miles SE of the commercial port of Rijeka on the mainland coast of Croatia and two miles N of the island of Krk. The harbour, little more than a deep cove, has a number of private moorings around its quays which may be able to be used with permission by a cruising yacht. Its south side is taken up by a commercial shipyard. Shelter is reasonable in most conditions, although fierce gusts will be experienced in a bora. The cove is open NW and strong winds from this direction would probably make it very uncomfortable and possibly untenable.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Approach and Navigation

The industrial installations at the entrance to Bakarski Zaljev are very conspicuous, especially the tall chimney with red and white painted bands on the NW side of the entrance. A green buoy to starboard on entry marks a shallow bank extending some 400 metres NW from the SE side of the entrance, immediately W of the harbour of Kraljevica. Once past the buoy, the harbour opens up half a mile to starboard.

Berthing Options

The S side of the cove is taken up by the large commercial shipyard. Private yacht moorings extend around the E and N side, one of which may be available for a cruising yacht to use. All moorings are equipped with pickup buoys. Alternatively, it may be possible to lay alongside or do an anchor moor to the quay W of the moorings if there is space.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

The cove is too small to anchor off, except towards the entrance, where depths are great and shelter is not good. In settled weather, Bakar is a better anchorage.
