Language of the Sea

EARING -

A rope attached to the cringle of a sail, by which it is bent or reefed.

EASE -

To slacken or relieve tension on a line.

EBB TIDE -

A receding tide.

EDDY -

Water currents moving in circular motion.

ELBOW -

Two crosses in a hawse.

ELECTRONIC NAVIGATION -

Use of various electronic devices, such as radio, satellite, echo sounders, position finders (GPS), etc., to aid in navigating.

EPIRB -

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon - Device using a radio signal indicating a position for person or vessel in distress.

ESCUTCHEON -

The part of the vessel in which her name is placed.

EUVROU -

A piece of wood, by which the legs of the crow-foot to the awning are extended.

EVEN KEEL -

When a boat is floating on its designed waterline, it is said to be floating on an even keel.

EYE OF THE WIND -

The direction from which the wind is blowing.

EYE SPLICE -

A permanent loop spliced in the end of a line.
