+ | Le Lavandou is a small town of 5,500 inhabitants nestling at the foot of the Massif des Maures, 25 miles E of the port of [[Toulon]] in [[France]] and 10 miles N of the beautiful [[Iles d'Hyeres]]. The old fishing harbour of the port has been developed over the years into a full-service marina, Port du Lavandou. A convenient stop-off point on a cruise to the [[Iles d'Hyeres]] or along the Riviera coast, it is also an excellent base for a trip to the lovely town of Bormes les Mimosa a few miles inland.

- | + | The predominant pattern during the summer months is coastal seabreezes, however Le Lavandou can be affected whenever there is a strong mistral blowing down the Rhone Valley (although winds here are slightly less strong than in the Rhone delta). Less frequently, it may be affected by the scirocco, a hot southerly wind that blows up from the Sahara and can last for several days, depositing its cargo of dust over everything in sight.

Le Lavandou itself is a typically colourful Provencal town, with the usual bright souvenir shops and pastel-coloured restaurants. The esplanade, lined with palm trees, gives onto streets lined with mimosa bushes and shaded by pine and eucalyptus trees. The tourist office in the town is very helpful in advising on excursions further afield, into the Massif des Maures or to the lovely town of Bormes-les-Mimosas. Bormes-les-Mimosas is well worth a visit and is within walking distance if you are energetic. It is a very pretty mediaeval hilltop affair, nestling in the shade of the former castle of the Seigneurs de Fos, with cobbled streets winding down through archways and bright bougainvillea draped over almost every building (even the church). | Le Lavandou itself is a typically colourful Provencal town, with the usual bright souvenir shops and pastel-coloured restaurants.
