Lipari is the largest island in the Aeolian archipelago and its eponymous town is the main ferry port for the island group. Traces of occupation have been found here dating back to Neolithic times and Lipari’s archaeological museum is one of the finest in southern Italy, with relics of Greek, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and later occupations. More contemporary accretions are the huge pumice mines at the northern end of the island, which are the island’s principal source of revenue after tourism. The town is dominated by a massive citadel, built in the 16th century by the Spanish on the remains of a former Greek acropolis. The citadel overlooks the town’s two main harbours, Marina Corta and Marina Longa (of which only the latter is suitable for yachts). Better shelter is to be found in the marina of Pignataro, which lies one mile NE around the bay.

Weather
The prevailing winds around the Aolian Islands during the summer tend to be from NW or NE, although in calm weather seabreezes can be encountered from any direction blowing onto and between the islands. While infrequent, gales are not unknown during the spring and early summer and careful forward planning is necessary as there are only two harbours which offer adequate shelter (and even then, not in strong southerlies). In winter, the gregale is a strong NE wind that can affect the whole of the island group and blow for several days.

- There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
- The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
- Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily).
There are no hazards in the approaches to Lipari, although there are gusts off the land and in the channel between Volcano and Lipari in strong NW winds.
Check-in facilities (Customs and Immigration)
Effectively, yachts have a choice of two mooring options: Marina Lunga immediately below the town citadel, where yachts berth on one of two long pontoons (one of which is seasonal) and Pignataro Marina, where yachts berth inside a protective breakwater. Pignataro, while lying a mile from the town centre, provides better shelter if adverse conditions are expected.

Ports
- Marina Lunga
38°28.3′N, 14°57.5′E consists of the stretch of quay immediately to the north of the ferry terminal and the citadel. Shelter here is reasonably good in winds from N round to SW but the bay is exposed to winds from all other directions. In strong easterlies it is untenable. Yachts berth on one of the two pontoons extending out from the quay between the ferry terminal and the commercial piers to the north. One 60 metre pontoon, operated by La Buona Fonda, is seasonal (May to October) and provides berthing for up to 40 yachts. The second, 90 metre pontoon is operated by Yacht Harbour Lipari and provides a further 40 berths. Maximum length 60 metres at both pontoons. Depths range from 4.0 - to 5.0 metres. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Call on VHF channel 16 or 72 or approach and await instructions.

- Pignataro Marina 38°28.55′N, 14°57.88′E lies at the NE end of the bay and offers berthing for up to 80 yachts stern-to a long protective mole or on pontoons. Maximum length 35 metres. Berths here are sheltered from all directions except SW (although the fetch is not great even from this direction). Depths at the mole range from 3.0 - 5.0 metres. Water and electricity at all berths. Call on VHF channel 16 or 74 or approach and await instructions. Note: Pignataro Marina offers the best shelter in the whole island group and therefore quickly fills up when the weather forecast turns adverse.
Anchorages
It is possible to anchor off in the bay of Lipari in settled weather, ensuring you are well clear of the commercial piers and mooring buoys. Better anchorages, especially in unsettled weather, are the two anchorages on Vulcano, Porto di Ponente and Porto di Levante, which offer reasonable shelter in strong winds from NE/SE and NW/SW respectively.

There are few facilities in the island for anything other than emergency repairs. Pignataro marina, with a mobile crane (70 T) and basic engine and electrical repair services, is the best spot for yachts in difficulty

Tourism and Things to do Ashore
Tourism
Lipari is a very attractive little town, in spite of the numerous tourist shops, with old houses clustered around the harbour, leafy alleyways crowded with pot plants and some amazing murals on some of the house walls. The Museo Archaeologico Eoliano in the 16th century citadel is an essential visit. The mueum has excellent displays of pottery and obsidian artefacts from Neolithic and Bronze Ages, and others from Punic, Greek and Roman eras. Among the highlights are some fascinating painted terracotta vases and a vast array of miniature theatrical masks and figurines from the former Greek necropolis. Also within the citadel is the Baroque cathedral, which contains some beautiful 12th century Benedictine cloisters.
