The village and harbour of Mali Iz lie on the NE side of the island of Iz in Croatia, two miles SE of the larger town and marina of Veli Iz. The tiny harbour consists of a quayed inlet and four short jetties, which are crammed with small leisure boats in shallow depths of around 1.0 - 1.5 metres. To the E of the harbour a new L-shaped ferry jetty has been constructed, the inner side of which offers useful alongside berthing for three or four yachts in good shelter from all but strong NE or E winds. The harbour is ringed with picturesque, stone fishermen’s cottages and the village has a pre-Romanesque church of St Mary dating back to the 11th century. | The village and harbour of Mali Iz lie on the NE side of the island of Iz in Croatia, two miles SE of the larger town and marina of Veli Iz. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split. | |

Mali Iz
| |
Local Weather
Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands.
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

There are no dangers in the immediate approach to Mali Iz. If approaching from N, it is possible in settled weather to pass between the islet of O. Knezak and Iz island, where there are least depths of 3.5 metres. However, in unsettled weather or with any swell running it is better to pass outside O. Knezak. Depths in the approach to the harbour are 6.0 - 7.0 metres and on the ferry quay 3.5 - 4.0 metres.
Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
Zadar is the nearest all-year round port of entry, or Sibenik if arriving from S. During the summer, Sali on Dugi Otok and Primosten on the mainland are also ports of entry.
Berthing Options
The only suitable berths for a yacht are alongside the inner, W side of the L-shaped ferry jetty. The ferry berths on the N-facing side of the ‘L’. Depths alongside here are from 3.5 metres near the root to 4.0 metres at the end. Shelter is very good in all conditions but strong NE or E winds. There are no facilities on the jetty.
