The harbour of Maratea lies on the E side of the Golfo di Policastro on the Calabrian coast of Italy, along the ‘instep’ of the peninsula. The harbour is better developed for yachts than most of the other harbours along this coast and therefore is usually busy, especially during July and August. The harbour provides a total of 600 berths for vessels of up to 45 metres on its pontoons and quays. Shelter in the harbour is good, although strong southerlies cause a swell.

Local Weather

Winds along the Tyrrhenian Coast of Italy are generally light in the summer months. The most notable feature is a SW seabreeze that kicks in in late morning and blows at little more than Force 2 - 4 until the evening. Thundery conditions are not infrequent during early Spring and Autumn, and associated winds can sometimes reach gale force and kick up a substantial sea. In winter, gales can blow from both NW and S and entry to and exit from some of the harbours along the coast can become hazardous.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia).

Approach and Navigation

The white marble statue of Christ dominating the village from the cliffs above is conspicuous from many miles off. There are no dangers in the approaches to Maratea, though strong gusts off the mountains will be experienced with even moderate northerly winds. The harbour is entered from NW and has depths of 8.0 - 10.0 metres in the entrance. Entry can be difficult in strong winds from NW and W.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

The pontoons and quays in the harbour are operated by various concessions. There are ostensibly 50 berths allocated to yachts in transit (but little sign of them on our visit in 2003 --Athene of Lymington 17:59, 17 December 2010 (UTC)). Maximum length 45 metres. Visiting yachts may find a berth on the three pontoons to the W of the harbour. Alternatively - and commonly in summer - visiting yachts berth alongside or stern-to the rough quay on the mole to the SE of the fuel station. Depths at the quay are from 3.0 - 6.0 metres. There is water and electricity on the pontoons but no facilities on the mole.

Tourism and Things to do Ashore

Tourism

The village of Maratea climbing up the cliffs above the harbour is quite picturesque. The walk up to the statue of Christ on the cliffs is a good stretch of the legs.
