Marzamemi
| |
The harbour of Marzamemi lies 28 miles south of Siracusa in Sicily and four miles north of Capo Passero, the southeasternmost point of the island. The harbour is relatively undeveloped. It is 1km (10 minute walk) from the village of Marzamemi. The village has an old tuna market that now functions as the home to restaurants. It is, however, a convenient stop-off point for a yacht day-sailing along the east coast of Sicily or planning to undertake the 60-mile passage down to Malta. Three different marina operations are based in the harbour, each providing over 100 berths for yachts of between 15 (Club Nautico) and 55 metres (Yacht Club Marzamemi).

Weather
Prevailing winds on the east coast of Sicily are NE during the summer. During spring and winter winds are often from SE and W in addition to NE.
Sources for weather forecasts:
- There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
- The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
- Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily)
Passages
Popular passages/routes, timing, etc.
Islands
- Isola di Capo Passero. The rocky island lying just off Capo Passero. In settled weather it is possible to anchor on the west side, where there are some popular beaches (lunch stop only).
There are no particular dangers in the approaches, although entrance is difficult and even possibly dangerous in strong winds from E and S. The sea bed shelves abruptly in the approaches and a dangerous swell is raised in the entrance. Once in the harbour, beware of the numerous rocky patches along the edges of the harbour and off the beach.
