Mozambique Island in itself is not very big, about 3 km long and between 200 and 500 metre wide. Most historical buildings are at the island's northern end. The majority of the residents live in reed houses in Makuti Town at the southern end of the island.
The island was a major Arab port and boat building centre long before Vasco da Gama visited in 1498. The Portuguese established a port and naval base as early as 1507, and built the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, in 1522, now considered the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere.

Approach
Tides are strong in the channel. There are no longer any buoys in the channel but the chart is accurate. Enter the bay north of Ilha de Goa on a bearing of 270º on the center of the island until the Goa light and leading beacon on Goa are in line, then turn to starboard and follow this line on 307º through the channel and behind (N.W.) the island.
Anchorages
You can anchor anywhere along the northwest side of the island but the best anchorage is just north of the old jetty in 4m over sand. There is a small beach directly in front of you here to land your dinghy. Beware of theft!
Tourism & things to do ashore
- The Fort of Sao Sebastiao on the Island of Mozambique is the oldest complete fort still standing in sub-Saharan Africa. Constructions began in 1558 and it took about 50 years to complete. Immediately beyond the fort is the recently restored Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, built in 1522 which is considered to be the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere. It is also one of the best examples of Manueline vaulted architecture in Mozambique.
