The two islands Paxos and Anti-Paxos (together are known as Paxoi) (Παξοί), Paxoi is the plural of Paxos. They are 7 nM south of Corfu (Kerkyra). These two island have become very fashionable with the tourists, especially with the Italians, and the charter fleets. In the summer they are crowded.

Ports

Port Gaios

World icon.png 39°12.12′N, 20°11.26′E

Port Gaios is the harbor of Paxos. Despite the crowded conditions is an attractive little harbor. It provides excellent shelter from strong North or West gales.

Moor stern-to the quay in front of the town or in the northern channel. When very busy in the summer months an alternative is to anchor in the north channel and take a stern line ashore to the N side of Ay. Nikolaos. The bottom is mostly sand with some weed and provides good holding. In the summer season yachts are required to move from some parts of the quay by 0900 to make space for tripper boats from the mainland.

Occasionally someone may come round and collect a mooring fee.

Anchorages

Port Lakka

World icon.png 39°14.4′N, 20°08.07′E

Port Lakka is an almost landlocked bay on north of Paxos. It is open only to the north east and provides good shelter from the meltemi. It is picturesque but very popular and liable to be crowded.

Anchor in 2-4 m over sand/mud and weed. There is a small quay that can take about 6 yachts stern-too. The view from the lighthouse is very good. Water and electricity available from the travel agent on the quay.

Port Longos is a small anchorage on the east of Paxos between Lakka and Gaios. There is a small quay that can take 2-3 yachts stern-too in calm weather. Village very pretty.

Danger: Be aware of the dangerous rock Ifalos Paxoi ESE of Longos.

Offshore Islands

Mongonisi

World icon.png 39°11′N, 20°12.21′E
At the south eastern tip of Paxos is the island of Mongonisi. Whether it is truly an island is perhaps debatable as the channel through between Paxos and Mongonisi becomes almost non existent at the southern end. Approach from the north. After passing though the narrow entrance the channel opens into a pleasant basin with space for a number of boats.

Once in the basin there is a small quay on the northeast side where a dozen or so yachts may go bow or stern too. Bow too is preferable as depths are not great close to the quay and there are some rocks. Additionally 3 or 4 boats may be able to moor bow or stern to a small dock just to the south of the sandy beach on the east side. Anchoring in the centre of the basin is also possible, either free swinging or taking a line to the shore on the south or southwest side.

The taverna behind the beach provides a nice show of Greek dancing when there are sufficient numbers of visitors.

Anti-Paxos

There are two bays on the east side of the Anti-Paxos island. They are very popular lunch and swimming spots. They are crowded and noisy during the day. In very calm weather a few yachts overnight here to enjoy the tranquility and clear water.
