Local Weather
See Turkey.
For most of the time, even in settled weather, winds blow down the Strait from the N and can funnel strongly in the narrower parts. It is not advisable to attempt a transit up to Poyraz in strong winds from N unless your engine is exceptionally powerful. In the harbour, the winds come mainly off the land, although in settled weather a light seabreeze can set into the harbour from SW. This should be borne in mind if anchoring amongst other yachts in these conditions.
In general navigation up to Poyraz is straightforward (see Bosphorus).
The harbour breakwater is easily identifiable just S of a conspicuous headland on the Asian side of the channel and the entrance is oriented SW. Beware of the dangerous rocky shoals towards the beach to starboard on entry. This section is usually buoyed off as a swimming area during the summer and there is also a prominent marker buoy to keep you clear of the dangers.
Danger:Very often there is a heavy fog and the strait is closed to traffic. Always listen to Bosphorus Control on the VHF (channels 11,12, and 13).
Berthing Options
There is a quayed breakwater and a short J-shaped jetty in the harbour. However, the jetty is normally full of local boats and (especially during the close period of May to September) fishing boats occupy every centimeter of the quay.
Anchorages
Anchor off behind the breakwater where convenient in 5.0 – 6.0 metres. The holding is good in mud and weed – once your anchor is through the weed. Don’t be tempted to anchor inside the 5.0 metre contour: the weed is at its thickest there. Shelter from the prevailing N/NE winds is good and even westerlies do not send in much of a chop.

- The anchorage is well sheltered, even with westerly winds, but suffers with swell from passing shipping.--Athene of Lymington 12:43, 13 June 2011 (BST)
