The Ria de Camarinhas lies on the coast of [[NW Spain]], some 18 miles NNE of Cape Finisterre.  It is the most southerly of the so-called Rias Altas (northerly Rias) and, lying as it does at the extreme NW tip of Spain, is also the most westerly.  There are several good anchorages in the N and S arms of the Ria, depending on wind direction and visiting yachts can also find pontoon berths in the small harbour of Camarinhas in the N arm and the even smaller harbour of Muxia immediately inside the headland at the S entrance to the Ria.  Shelter in the two harbours is good in the prevailing NW winds, but shelter is less good in strong easterlies.  The town of Camarinhas is famous for its lacework and examples are sold from the doorsteps of many of its houses in addition to being exported all over the world.  The town's lace museum has many fine examples.

The Ria de Camarinhas lies on the coast of NW Spain, some 18 miles NNE of Cape Finisterre.

Local Weather

The prevailing NW winds blow straight down in to the Ria and can raise a nasty swell if they are strong. Fortunately the entrance is wide and free of hazards and the swell decreases once rounding the peninsula on which the town of Camarinhas sits.

Approach and Navigation

The entrance to the Ria de Camarinhas is wide and free from dangers. If approaching from N, the headland of Cabo Vilan is notorious for its offlying islets and rocks and should be given a wide berth in bad weather. Approaching from S, the headland N of Muxia at the S entrance to the Ria has offlying dangers and should similarly be given a wide berth.

Berthing Options

Pontoons of Muxia Marina - Click for larger view

Visiting yachts have the option of berthing bows or stern-to one of the pontoons of the Club Nautico de Camarinas in the harbour of Camarinhas (if there is space available), berthing on one of the finger pontoons in the newly opened small marina of Club Nautico de Muxia on the S side of the entrance to the Ria, or anchoring in one of the coves in the N or S arms of the Ria, depending on wind direction.

It operates three pontoons inside the small harbour of Camarinhas in the N arm of the Ria. The pontoons provide berths for around 90 vessels (maximum length 13 metres) on finger pontoons (although most of these are usually taken by local boats). Depths at the pontoons range from 2.0 metres at the shore end to 5.0 metres at the outer end. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Toilets and showers. Laundry. Cafe/bar. Wifi. Shelter in the marina is good, although strong easterly winds send in an unpleasant chop. Call on VHF channel 09. Telephone: +34 981 737130. Email. Alternativerly, fill in the enquiry form on the website. Website.

Electricity but no water at present. Wifi. Temporary toilets and showers. Bars and restaurants nearby. Call on VHF channel 09. Telephone: +34 673 168199.

Anchorages

Anchored in Camarinhas - Click for larger view

In the prevailing NW winds, the best shelter is to be found in the N arm of the Ria, at anchor N of the breakwater of Camarinhas harbour in 5.0 – 6.0 metres or further N outside the small craft moorings in similar depths. Holding is good in mud and sand. Note that access to the most N part of the N arm is blocked by a barrier.

In strong southerlies, the sandy coves immediately SSE of Muxia harbour and a mile to the SE offer better shelter in depths of 5.0 – 8.0 metres

Tourism

Lacemaking is an important local industry - Click for larger view

Camarinhas is not an especially attractive town, having suffered both in the Napoleonic Wars and more recently the Spanish Civil War. Most of the town today is reinforced concrete. However, if you are interested in lace this is the place to come, with seemingly half the women in Camarinhas engaged in lace making and a thriving museum of lace.
