Marina Laghi di Sibari is a huge residential and marina development constructed in its own private lagoon and joined to the sea via a narrow, dredged river channel.  It is situated some 30 miles NW of [[Cariati Marina]] on the western side of the Golfo di Taranto, 32 miles N of Crotone and 12 miles N of Punta Alice.  It is a useful port of call for yachts sailing round the Golfo di Taranto and a good base for leaving a yacht in safety while exploring this area of Calabria (or even for over-wintering). However, the entrance constantly silts and depths can vary, especially after strong onshore winds.

During the summer the prevailing winds in the Ionian are light to moderate SW or SE seabreezes.  In spring and autumn northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the lee of high mountain ranges.  Winds in summer are generally light from the Straits of Messina until reaching the Golfo di Squillace between Rocella Ionica and Le Castella.  With anything W in the wind, it tends to funnel down here over the mountains of southern Calabria, bringing strong gusts and raising an uncomfortable sea.  The conditions to avoid, however, when cruising this part of the Ionian coast are strong southerlies.  The harbours here are few and far between and none of them are really safe to enter in such conditions.  Further east in the Gulf of Taranto local seabreezes predominate during the summer, although a light to moderate northerly is not uncommon.

The coastline to either side of the marina entrance shoals from nearly a mile offshore and great care is needed to follow the dredged channel, which is buoyed from the 5.0 metre contour.  Depths in the entrance are usually little more than 3.0 metres, so entry would be difficult and possibly dangerous with strong onshore winds.  The buoyed channel leads between two rocky breakwaters and for a further 500 metres up the river channel before the marina entrance appears to port.  The marina is entered through a set of flood gates.  Note: there is a maximum beam limit of 6.0 metres at the gates, so the marina is unsuitable for most catamarans.

Marina Laghi di Sibari is a huge residential and marina development constructed in its own private lagoon and joined to the sea via a narrow, dredged river channel. It is situated some 30 miles NW of Cariati Marina on the western side of the Golfo di Taranto, 32 miles N of Crotone and 12 miles N of Punta Alice. It is a useful port of call for yachts sailing round the Golfo di Taranto and a good base for leaving a yacht in safety while exploring this area of Calabria (or even for over-wintering). However, the entrance constantly silts and depths can vary, especially after strong onshore winds.

Local Weather

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily).

Approach and Navigation
