If you have a shallow enough draft of 1.5 m, you can potter about the broader avenues in the Delta and anchor in the still waters there.  The canals are wonderfully peaceful and offer a safe haven from the noise of Sulina.

Sulina (Romanian pronunciation: suˈlina) is a town and free port in Tulcea County, Romania, at the mouth of the Sulina branch of the Danube. It is the easternmost point of Romania.

The waters of the Danube, which flow into the Black Sea, form the largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas. The Danube delta hosts over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes.

Navigation

Go to the buoy Template:Coord legacy and then head on a 301 M course for 5 nM, following the channel markings, through the river to the quay.

Navigating in the river can be very difficult because of the strong current (see notes above in Location). Traffic on the river/canal is heavy at times

Entrance

Sulina is a port of entry for Romania. For details see Entrance: Romania.

Inform the harbor master one hour before departure.

Berthing

Alongside in Sulina

The shelter here is excellent all-round.

Follow the instructions of the harbor master.

You moor along side on either the N or the S quay. The S side is more preferable. During the day especially, dozens of small ribs will zoom past, causing lots of wash and will most likely throw your boat around a bit. Use lots of fenders and check all lines ashore periodically.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None, but you may be charged for staying there all the same. The rate is 10 dollars a day, regardless of boat size. Whether you are charged or not depends on whether anyone comes and notices you. You will need to ask around for access to the electricity, held by the same people who take the money for mooring. More often than not though, boats leave without having paid anything, as no one comes to collect.

At mile 2 is pension mila 2 with 2 pontoons in the river. Water and electricity can be brought to the pontoon.

Anchorages

If you have a shallow enough draft of 1.5 m, you can potter about the broader avenues in the Delta and anchor in the still waters there. The canals are wonderfully peaceful and offer a safe haven from the noise of Sulina.

  • I have stayed he many times, and have become quite friendly with one of the 'Port Captains', who took me out into the wild Delta fishing, then back to his home where his wife cooked the days catch, 50 euro for the whole day for all of us! The local 'artist' is talented and has actual local exhibitions of his work, and he will most likely stroll or cycle past your boat. It's slowly improving along the quayside, yet the inner town remains its old rustic self. --BenPikeUK 09:02, 2 May 2013
  • in July 2017 we got no berth (50ft) along Sulina. We went back to pension Mila 2. This hotel has 2 new pontoons in the river also for bigger yachts. While eating and drinking in the hotel there is no additional charge. The owner is very friendly and helpful. He brought us to harbour master and border police with his car. A minibus connects to the city each hour and the a taxi is cheap. Nice place to stay and less swell then in the harbour of the town. --Conch 10:02, 21 July 2017 (BST)
