Tisno from NW (W quay -- right bottom, SE quay -- left just above centre)

The town of Tisno (formerly known as Tijesno) is situated in the narrowest part of the channel separating the island of Murter from the mainland of Croatia.

The channel here is crossed by a road bridge which lifts twice a day during the season and once a day on just three days of the week outside the season.

Currents can often run strongly through the channel and may reach 3-4 knots on occasion. The channel is unsuitable for navigation by deep draft yachts, having least depths of barely two metres in the W approach and slightly less in the E approach.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Navigation

Tisno bridge

Approach from N

The approach to Tisno from W is difficult and should not be attempted without an up to date chart or in extreme weather conditions.

Danger: None of the passages between the islands in the approaches can be described as safe in heavy weather. For a map showing the options for approaching Tisno from this direction, click on Approaches to Murter.

Once past the headland of Rt. Artic immediately N of the old harbour of Betina there are no further hazards in the approach.

Approach from S

The approach from S, between Murter Island and the mainland, presents no special difficulties other than the numerous islets to be avoided. Note, however, that the channel in the approach to Tisno shoals from over 12 metres to barely two metres once past the pier to port at the S end of the town.

Movable bridge in Tisno

The depth under the bridge is about 2.4 m. The clearance of the closed bridge is 2 m. Strong SE or NW winds and tide could cause a current up to 4 knots. The bridge opens daily from May 15th to September 15th at 0900 and 1700 and at other times on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only at 0900.

The bridge opens quite slowly, so don't be embarrassed -- they'll let you through. Passing the bridge is a bit of fun though.

Entrance

Šibenik is the nearest all-year port of entry.

Berthing

View towards SE quay from SE

There are two principal berthing options in Tisno. There are no facilities at the either of them, but there are grocery shops just across the road at the both locations.

Tisno W quay

Moor alongside on the quay on the island side of the channel immediately W of the lifting bridge. Unfortunately this quay could be quite filled up with (semi)permanently moored craft. Depths here are slightly over 2.0 metres.

The shelter here is good in all conditions except strong NW winds (although a strong bora would probably also make it very uncomfortable here).

Tisno SE quay

The N half of a newer SE quay (E of the bridge) is designated to vessels in transit. As of Sept 2016 there were laid moorings only at a few places. Whether they could be used by visiting yachts was left unknown. The depths at the quay seem to be over 3 metres.

The berths are open from E to SE.

Anchorages

The anchorage of U. Artic lies in a small inlet on the mainland side of the channel about 500 metres E of the bridge. Anchor in 3.0 - 4.0 metres. Shelter here is good from all directions except S. Holding is also good in sand, mud and weed.

Also anywhere clear of the channel on the E side of the bridge.

Tourism

Tower of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Tisno

Tisno is an attractive town and well worth exploring while waiting for the bridge to open. The parish church of the Holy Spirit dates back to the 16th century and was given a Baroque ‘makeover’ in 1640.
