The small island of Vir in Croatia lies just off the SW end of the larger island Pag, separated from it by a channel less than a mile wide, the Kanal Nove Povljane. At its SE end, the island is joined to the mainland by a road bridge, the channel beneath which is navigable only by small vessels. The island has just one village on the S coast, Vir Town, with a population of around 1500, and an even smaller settlement on its N coast, Lozice. Although a small island, it is a popular destination for tourists from the mainland during the summer. Vir is less visited by yachtsmen than its neighbouring islands, however, in view of its limited facilities, which consist of an anchorage in the wide bay off Vir Town open to S winds and another off Lozice open N.

Anchorages
There are two anchorages on Vir Island:
Zaljev Vir
The bay of Zaljev Vir is nearly two miles wide from W to E. Its eastern extremity terminates at the bridge joining the island to the mainland. The settlement of Vir Town sprawls along most of the N shore of the bay. If approaching from W, note that there is an unmarked shoal area around 500 metres NE of the headland at the W end of the bay. Once into the bay, anchor wherever convenient off the town in 6.0 - 8.0 metres. The holding is good in sand and weed. The shelter is good here in the prevailing NW winds, but the bay is completely open S and SE and untenable in strong winds from this directions.
