Yerakas (Γέρακας) or Ieraka or Yeraki is a hamlet in a deep fjord leading into a shallow lagoon, situated on the SE coast of the Peloponnese. This is a most beautiful place and provides good shelter in the meltemi, although there is some reflected swell in very strong NE winds.

Approach and Navigation

Yerakas Entrance.jpgEntering Yerakas

Entering into Yerakas can be a little tricky but once inside the fjord it provides excellent all around shelter (although there is some reflected swell in very strong NE winds.)

Yerakas with its deep the fjord it is an excellent all around shelter.

With a small yacht you can go side-to the small village quay. Many cruisers do not find this very attractive and prefer instead to anchor off in 4-6 m. The holding away from the quay, once your anchor has dug in the mud, is good.

If you anchor moor to the quay, note that the holding is not always good and several attempts may be necessary. For this reason, many yachts prefer at less busy periods to go alongside the concrete jetty at the entrance to the harbour, where depths are 4.0 - 5.0 metres.

About 2 nM north of Yerakas there is fairly nice cove. The cove is not very well protected but it is a pleasant lunch stop.

Personal Notes

Personal experiences?

  • We went alongside on the concrete jetty, on the advice of a departing Dutch yacht which had dragged onto the quay the previous night. However, this didn't please an arriving Italian skipper, who went alongside us without fenders and took a chunk out of our stern to punish us for not doing an anchor moor. Moral: either do an anchor moor here or put out fenders for yachts wishing to raft up on you. --Athene of Lymington 15:44, 19 February 2013 (GMT)
