Malmö (/ˈmælmoʊ/, UK also /ˈmælmɜː/; Swedish: [malmøː] (About this soundlisten); Danish: Malmø [ˈmalmøːˀ]) is the capital and largest city of the Swedish county of Skåne County. The metropolis is a gamma-minus world city (the 10th tier of cities, as listed by the GaWC), the third-largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the sixth-largest city in Scandinavia, with a population of above 300,000. The Malmö Metropolitan Region is home to 700,000 people, and the Øresund Region, which includes Malmö, is home to 3.9 million people.

The city is part of the transnational Øresund Region and, since 2000, has been linked by the Øresund Bridge across the Øresund to Copenhagen, Denmark. The bridge opened on 1 July 2000, and measures 8 kilometres (5 miles) (the whole link totalling 16 km), with pylons reaching 204.5 metres (670.9 feet) vertically. Apart from the Helsingborg-Helsingør ferry links further north, most ferry connections have been discontinued.

Transportation

  • The Malmö Airport (about 30 km by road from central Malmö) is mostly used by low-fare, charter and regional carriers. There are three connections to Stockholm – with SAS (Arlanda), Norwegian (Arlanda) and BRA (Bromma)
  • Malmö is well served by trains, including frequent regional and commuter services within Scania as well as long-distance trains from Stockholm and Gothenburg
  • Finnlines runs a ferry line between Travemünde in northern Germany and Malmö. The ferry line is mostly directed towards trucks and car drivers, but it is possible to book tickets for pedestrians
  • Malmö is best experienced by bicycle, the city is interlaced with lots of bicycle roads. Malmö is known as a very bike-friendly city (and indeed, biking is the preferred method of transportation here)
