The small harbour of Luka Račišće lies on the N coast of the island of Korcula in Croatia, separated from the W end of the long Peljesac Peninsula on the mainland by a mile-wide channel.  The bay is around five miles W of the facilities of Korcula Town, which are easily accessible by bus.  The village of Racisce is built around the natural amphitheatre of the bay and surrounded by forested hills.  Its harbour provides a peaceful alternative to the bustle of Korcula Town during the busy summer months and shelter is good in any but northerly winds.

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands.  At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coastDuring early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seasIn the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

The best berthing option for a visiting yacht is to go stern or bows-to the jetty on the W side of the bay using the anchor.  Depths here are 4.0 - 5.0 metres and the holding is good in sand and weed.  However, there are reports that the bottom is foul in parts of the harbour, so it may be wise to buoy the anchor (or watch very carefully where you drop it).  Alternatively, if the harbour is not busy, it may be possible to go alongside.  Shelter is good in all but fresh to strong winds from NW round to NE.

Racisce harbour from NW - Click for larger view

The small harbour of Luka Račišće lies on the N coast of the island of Korcula in Croatia, separated from the W end of the long Peljesac Peninsula on the mainland by a mile-wide channel. The bay is around five miles W of the facilities of Korcula Town, which are easily accessible by bus. The village of Racisce is built around the natural amphitheatre of the bay and surrounded by forested hills. Its harbour provides a peaceful alternative to the bustle of Korcula Town during the busy summer months and shelter is good in any but northerly winds.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Approach and Navigation

There are no dangers in the approach to Luka Racisce. A war memorial on the headland on the NE side of the bay is a useful marker. The harbour at the head of the bay is protected by a long jetty on the SW side of the bay, marked with a green starboard beacon.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Korcula Town is the nearest year-round port of entry.

Berthing Options

Yacht on jetty of Racisce harbour - Click for larger view

The best berthing option for a visiting yacht is to go stern or bows-to the jetty on the W side of the bay using the anchor. Depths here are 4.0 - 5.0 metres and the holding is good in sand and weed. However, there are reports that the bottom is foul in parts of the harbour, so it may be wise to buoy the anchor (or watch very carefully where you drop it). Alternatively, if the harbour is not busy, it may be possible to go alongside. Shelter is good in all but fresh to strong winds from NW round to NE.
