Alassio is a small resort on the Ligurian coast of Italy five miles N of Andora and 30 miles SW of Savona. Its natural amenities have attracted numerous celebrities over the years, many of whose signatures are preserved on tiles in the town’s famous Muretto di Alassio, including Louis Armstrong, Teddy Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Frank Sinatra. Another famous visitor, the English composer Edward Elgar, wrote a concert-overture In the South (Alassio) while staying here in 1903-4.
