Ammoudia is a less well visited bay, perhaps due to is sleepy nature. It lies on the Mouth of the Acheron river, which is navigable up to the town, where it is also possible to moor.

The beaches clean, and shade is to be found in the worded areas immediately behind them. The southern reaches are usually full of campers and caravaners.

The River Acheron form the largest part of the attraction to this little town. It's waters are crisp and cool, very cool in fact, and great to swim in. The wild life upstream makes it worth taking a tender up against the current, alternatively, take an easy Kayaking trip with the local company there. Motor boats along the key side also do river trips, but these are short, as the river is blocked to larger vessels by fallen trees.

Local Weather

In summer the weather conditions are typical for the northern Ionian. The early morning is usually calm. At about 11:00 the first light wind starts to blow from the NW into the bay, increasing as the afternoon passes and then dying away again in the evening.

Approach and Navigation

No real difficulties with entering the bay. The mouth of the Acheron river experiences a fair swell, combined with a downstream current of about 1.5 knots. This combination makes for some unpredictable handling, so a little speed is advised to enter safely. There are shallows immediately to the south as you enter. There are no real navigation lights, however the breakwater is well lit all the way up to the town. A night entry/exit is not advised.
