The large castle that dominates the small town was built by the Genoese at the end of the Byzantine era. In modern times the island was inhabited by Greeks and was part of Greece until 1923,when it was ceded to Turkey (together with Ibroz or Imvros) under the terms of the peace treaty. The Greek inhabitants were not exchanged (as was the case elsewhere) but were allowed to stay and operate their schools and churches. Over the years, and particularly since the start of the Cyprus problem, most Greeks have left. The island is still well known for its vineyards and production of wine.
The island used to be a military zone and visits by foreign yachts were discouraged until recent years. Now yachts are positively encouraged as a useful source of income (see below for charges). The harbor has very clear and attractive water. The town is slowly being restored, and is fashionable with wealthy people from Istanbul. There are many interesting old houses and buildings.

The approaches to Bozcaada from S and W are straightforward, with few dangers. However, the coast of the island is rock-fringed and should not be approached too closely on passage. In the approach from N, there are extensive shoals around the small island of Tavşan Adasi which should be given a good clearance and others extending up to two miles from the northern coast of Bozcaada.

There is only one harbour, which is run by the municipality. Yachts moor stern-to or alongside the quayed breakwater. There are a few laid moorings which may be picked up if available (six as of May 2011). An attendant will help with mooring during daylight hours. Since the installation of the moorings anchoring in the harbour is now prohibited. Water and electricity are also available at additional cost along the quay. Currently (May 2011) the daily mooring charge is YTL 30 and an extra charge of YTL 20 is made for electricity and water.
Warning: The ground chain for the mooring lines has been laid some 40 metres off the quay, which means that the angle of the lines when boats are moored to them is very shallow. Be sure to leave a good clearance when passing in front of the bows of moored boats as several yachts have wound up with lines around their props.

It is possible to anchor outside the harbour, clear of the fairway, in settled weather only. With strong winds from any direction, anchoring here is untenable.

- There is no fuel station on the quay. The one station on the island is about 3km out of town. Delivery can be arranged by truck to the quay +90 286 697 0190 / 0530 767 5051 YTL 4.15 / litre in 2013.

Tourism
The large and well-preserved Genoese castle, which also has a small museum, is worth a visit. The old Greek town is attractive, with narrow picturesque streets. But very few of the Greeks are still remaining.
The island is renowned for its red wines, which can be tasted and purchased in the main square.

There are several good restaurants around the fishing harbour and three simple cafés on the quay. Sandal is particularly good.

Free WiFi is available from the municipality (Bozcaada1) but a booster is needed as the signal is weak. However, the Yaren café (the most easterly of the three on the quay) has a good WiFi signal.
