Local Weather

Chatham weather is typical for New England. It is changeable. The typical summer conditions are fair and calm in the mornings with a strong South West wind building in the afternoon, dying off in evening. A high pressure system will bring North West winds that are dry and cold. Low pressure systems are preceded by Easterly winds. South Easterly winds usually bring fog. North Easterly winds are rainy and cold.

Approach and Navigation

Berthing Options

Chatham, MA has two harbors. Stage Harbor opens into Nantucket Sound. The entrance is well marked and shifts very little. Stage Harbor leads to two interior ponds and the town center. Both inlets are shallow. Stage Harbor is deep enough for cruising yachts. Just inside the entrance to the harbor is a pleasant anchorage with town moorings. Anchoring is restricted and the harbor master will advise where a visiting yacht may anchor or moor.

Chatham Harbor opens to the Atlantic Ocean and is subject to considerable shifting. It is generally considered unwise to use this harbor entrance without local knowledge. Chatham Harbor leads to the town of Orleans via Pleasant Bay. Pleasant Bay and the upper Chatham Harbor are noted for sandbars, some narrow cuts and protected salt water ponds.
