An online cruising guide for yachts sailing to Ile de Re

Ile de Re is one of the most beautiful of all the French Atlantic islands, with a picturesque and historic harbour, sleepy villages, vineyards sleeping in the sun, deserted beaches (at least, out of season) and a profusion of hollyhocks lining all the lanes in spring. The main harbour is the tidal harbour of St Martin de Re. The smaller harbour of La Flotte to the SE is unsuitable for yachts as it dries at low water. A road bridge links the island to La Rochelle on the mainland, bringing floods of visitors and weekenders from the city during the summer months.

Approach and Navigation

The main harbour of St Martin may be approached either from the north or from the south under the Pont des Sablanceaux which links the island to the mainland.

The main harbour of St Martin de Re is tidal. There are three buoys outside the harbour, which may be used as waiting buoys if arriving outside the period when yachts may lock into the harbour, which is approximately 1.5 - 2 hours either side of high water. Once inside the harbour, there is a visitors' pontoon directly across from the entrance with space for 5-6 yachts. The harbour gets very busy during the season and it may be difficult to find space.

The harbour of La Flotte, while very picturesque, dries and is therefore only suitable for bilge keel yachts.

Raking the salt pans

The walled town of St Martin is one of the most attractive of all the capitals of the French Atlantic islands. Roaming further afield along the island's excellent network of cycle/walking paths takes the visitor along country lanes lined with hollyhocks, through vineyards and past salt pans to the attractive coastal villages of Ars en Re and Loix. On the SW side of the island is the stunning 10 km-long beach of le Bois-Plage. At the northern end of the island is the wildlife sanctuary of Lilleau des Neiges, with plenty of egrets, buzzards, avocets and kestrels on show.
