The port of Kali lies on the SE coast of the island of Ugljan, just under two miles SE of the town of Preko. Basically a fishing harbour and usually crammed to capacity, its N and S harbours are probably best regarded as a port of refuge in an emergency, and certainly not in bad weather, when the fishing fleet will be in harbour.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

There are no dangers in the approach to Kali.

The nearest year-round port of entry is Zadar.

Berthing options

Kali is a very busy fishing harbour and has little space for yachts in either its N or S harbour. If there is space, the best position is alongside the E breakwater in N harbour, where there are depths of 3.0 - 4.0 metres. You should be prepared to leave if asked to do so by a fishing boat. Alternatively tie up alongside a fishing boat if allowed. Shelter here is good except with anything N in the wind, when the S harbour offers better shelter (although even less space).

The nearest suitable anchorage is at Poljana just N of Preko, or, in settled weather, at Preko itself..

Although the town makes no provision for yachts, it is quite attractive as a working fishing town and attracts a steady flow of tourists during the season.
