Cruising the region

Add any cruising recommendations. If not applicable delete this section. This is from Bill and Leslie of Manjack Cay and it is to correct and clarify a previous posting about us. I'm sorry to announce that we are no longer able to share our wifi with cruisers as previously stated by some unknown person on this site. We we're happy to do so for several years but through VHF chatter and various blogs it came to the attention of Bahamas WiMAX, who sells the service from nearby Green Turtle Cay, that we were giving it away. That was hurting their business so they asked us to stop or else pay for a commercial account like a marina or hotel that gave it away to customers. The cost was beyond our means so we had no choice but to turn it off for the harbor. Sorry, Bill

Radio Nets

The Abacos has an informally organized local VHF channel specifically designed to help yachtsmen who are not totally familiar with The Abacos' waters. Since many local and cruising yachtsmen standby on VHF 68, a convenient source of "local knowledge" or help in an emergency. Additionally, at 8:15 AM, the Abacos' most accurate local weather and sea conditions forecast is available. Medical and rescue help (through Bahamas Air Sea Rescue) stands by on VHF 83 out of Treasure Cay.

The Network begins its day at 8:15 each morning and continues for just over an hour. Weather reports are given, cruiser news and information is exchanged, newcomers and returnees welcomed to the area and those departing for stays elsewhere are bid a fond farewell. Advertisements for restaurants, bars and community events are announced free of charge and there is a special segment called the "open mike" which invites comments and advice from anyone in the area who can tune in to VHF 68.

Although you probably won't be able to receive the Abacos Cruisersnet on VHF 68 at 8:15 am, you can get it slightly delayed on the internet A local couple has provided free internet in the main anchorage at Manjack.

Sorry but the free wifi is no longer available. However, the Green Turtle Club does a weather relay just after the Cruisers Net for those out of range like at Manjack. Bill

Cruiser's Friends

  • Bill and Leslie, who live just north of the beach at the main anchorage are good friends of cruisers. Take your dinghy to the dock or beach and say hi. They provide free WiFi to those anchored off the beach. To thank them, take a plastic garbage bag ashore with you, pick up some of the flotsam and jetsam on the island and take it with you

See other note about wifi at beginning of section Bill

This is from Bill and Leslie of Manajck and is to further clarify the above comments. We are former cruisers who have moved ashore but do still enjoy meeting the serious cruisers and nature lovers. We have well marked nature trails that will take you from our small palm tree Iined beach, across the island, to a beautiful ocean beach. We prefer that you land at the beach rather than our small, well used ,house dock. Also, we do have pet chickens free ranging, including the beach, so we request that dogs be leashed. Enjoy, Bill
