The quay on the S side of the inlet, past the long breakwater extending due N from the S shore, has been developed as a yacht marina and is operated by the Martinis Marchi Hotel, the converted 17th century palace immediately next to the quay.  The jetty on the N side of the harbour is used by ferries and tripper boats. Shallow or moderate draft yachts can moor stern or bows-to on the S quay in front of the hotel in around 2.0 metres.  Deeper draft yachts go on the berths nearer the breakwater, where there are depths of just over 3.0 metres.  There are a total of 50 berths with laid lines along the quay.  Water and electricity points provided.  Toilets but no showers.  Wifi.  Shelter here is good in all conditions except with strong W winds, when a heavy swell enters.  A typical 13 metres yacht will pay between Euros 62 and Euros 75 per night, depending on the season.

If the quay is full or the depths too shallow, it is also possible to berth along the outside of the long breakwater, where depths are 10-15 metres.  This position is only tenable in settled weather and certainly not in strong W winds.

Maslinica harbour from NW - Click for larger view

The village and harbour of Maslinica lie on the W coast of the island of Solta in Croatia, sheltered from W by a group of six small islands and shoals. The harbour consists of a V-shaped inlet protected on its W side by a long breakwater extending from the southern shore. Visiting yachts moor stern or bows-to on the quay on the S sides of the harbour, using the laid moorings provided. There are water and electricity points on the quay. The inlet is protected in winds from most directions but is partially exposed in strong W winds. During busy periods, there is often little room for visiting yachts arriving late in the day and it may be necessary to go on to the equally busy anchorage of U. Sesula immediately S.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Approach and Navigation

There are several dangers in the approach to Maslinica, but they should present no problems with proper attention to the chart. A shoal in the approach from S, Hrid Kamicic, lies about half a mile due S of the island of Balkun. In the approach from N, note that the channels between the islands of Polebrnjak and Saskinja and between Soskinja and Solta have least depths of 2.8 and 3.8 metres respectively and passage should only be attempted by shallow draft yachts and in settled weather.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Split is the nearest all-year round port of entry. During the summer, Hvar and, if arriving from N, Primosten on the mainland are also ports of entry.
