==Local Weather==

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the ''bora'', is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
 +

 +
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the ''scirocco'', a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean.  Unlike the ''bora'', the ''scirocco'' only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Pasman harbour from NE - Click for larger view

Pasman Town is situated is situated about halfway down the NW side of the island of Pasman in Croatia, just W of the small islet of Babac. While the town is not one of the prettiest of the Dalmatian island capitals, it has a harbour which provides a useful overnight berth for a shallow to moderate draft yacht on passage down the NE side of the island.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Approach and Navigation

There are no dangers in the immediate approach to Pasman Town, although the current can run quite strongly across the harbour entrance at certain states of tide. Note that if approaching from S the three islets SW of O. Babac should be left to port. If crossing from the mainland, note also that the channel between the island of Babac just off Pasman Town and the smaller islet of O. Komornik 350 metres N has depths of just under 4.0 metres and should be avoided with any swell running. The harbour of Pasman Town is entered from N and has depths of 4.0 metres in the entrance and 2.0 - 3.0 metres inside.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Zadar is the nearest all-year round port of entry, or Sibenik if arriving from S. During the summer, Sali on Dugi Otok and Primosten on the mainland are also ports of entry.

Berthing Options

There is effectively only one berthing option in Pasman Town, which is alongside on the quay of the E breakwater, as close to the end as possible. Depths alongside here range from 2.0 metres at the ‘elbow’ of the breakwater to just under 3.0 metres at the end. Ferries also occasionally use the end of the breakwater and it is worth checking the ferry schedule before going ashore. Shelter here is good in all conditions except strong E or NE winds.
