Povoa de Varzim is a small fishing town and resort some 23 miles south of Viana do Castelo and 12 miles north of Leixoes on the west coast of Portugal.

From either north or south the projecting breakwaters of the harbour are conspicuous. The harbour is entered on a bearing of 045. If entering from the north, give the northerly breakwater a wide berth, especially with any swell running, since waves often break at its extremity. There is also an isolated rock close to the inside of the breakwater. Once in through the entrance, turn to starboard past several unlit green buoys marking shallows near the breakwater. The marina pontoons are at the southern end of the harbour.
