The harbour of Sali lies on the SE coast of the island of Dugi Otok off the mainland coast of Croatia, 14 miles SSW of the city of Zadar.  Sheltered from E by the small island of Lavdara two miles offshore, Sali is the largest town on the island and the main ferry port (although U. Triluke now receives the car ferry from Zadar).  While the harbour still hosts a small fishing fleet, it is increasingly given over to tripper boats and yachts, with yacht quays on both sides of its harbour equipped with laid moorings, water and electricity.  Formerly an important centre for salt production, the main industry of Sali today -other than tourism -  is the large fish processing plant on the outskirts of the town.  Over the weekend prior to the feast of the Assumption (15 August), the town hosts the festival of Saljske Uzance, when locals dress in traditional costume and music and dancing is followed by a donkey race and concludes with a candlelit procession of boats around the harbour.

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands.  At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Once past the outer breakwater (which is used by the fishing fleet), visiting yachts berth on either of the two quays on the NE and SW sides of the harbour.  Depths are between 4.0 and 5.0 metres and there are laid moorings, water and electricity on both quays.  Shelter here is  good in most conditions, although strong SE winds made the harbour very uncomfortable and it would be untenable in a gale from that direction.  Note that the inner harbour is shallow and usually filled with local small craft.

Whiile not as attractive as some of the island capitals, Sali is not without its charm and it somewhat quieter than others.  The highlight of the year is the the festival of Saljske Uzance, held the weekend before Assumption Day (15 August), when locals dress in traditional costume and perform on musical instruments fashioned from cows’ horns.  Three days of music, dancing, eating and drinking culminates in a fiercely competitive donkey race and concludes with a candlelit procession of boats around the harbour.

Sali harbour from NE - Click for larger view

Local Weather

Approach and Navigation

There are no dangers in the immediate approach to Sali, but there are shoal patches in the approach from NE off the island of Lavdara and between the two islets a mile NW of it. Depths in the harbour entrance are 5.0 - 6.0 metres and on the quays 4.0 - 5.0 metres. The harbour is protected from S by a long breakwater with a light structure on the end.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
