The commercial port of Supetar is situated on the N coast of the island of Brac, 10 miles SE of the town of Split on the mainland of Croatia.  It is the main ferry port of the island and most of the tourists visiting the island during the summer are disgorged here.  As such, it is not the quietest of places to moor and shelter is not as good as it might be in the afternoon sea breeze, which blows straight into the harbour from W/NW.  However, it has the best selection of supermarkets and other shops on the island and is a good place to stop for provisions before exploring the island’s other harbours and anchorages.   It is also handy as a pickup point for crew flying into the airport at Split.

Weather
Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands.  At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
+
See Croatia.
-
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean.  Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Supetar harbour from N

The commercial port of Supetar is situated on the N coast of the island of Brač, 10 miles SE of the town of Split on the mainland of Croatia.

Navigation

The approach to Supetar has no hazards, although the coastline is shallow for some 300-400 metres off on either side of the harbour. Ferries from Split charge in and out of the harbour during the day and caution is needed on entering. Depths in the entrance are 6.0 metres; in the outer harbour 5.0 metres and in the inner harbour 3.0 - 4.0 metres.
