Istria (Croatian: Istra) is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea.
The western coastline of it extends from Umag just south of the Slovenian border as far as the major port of Pula. Mostly low-lying and green, the coastline here is well-equipped with marinas and harbours, several of them among the finest examples of mediaeval Venetian towns in Croatia.
The eastern coastline, from Pula towards Opatija, by contrast, is less populous, more mountainous and deeply indented in places, with fewer harbours and anchorages.
