Overview
+
The harbour of Amfilochia is situated at the SE corner of the Ambrakikos Gulf, around 20 miles inland from the port of Preveza on the Ionian coast of Greece.  Primarily a commercial and fishing boat harbour, the port serves a mainly agricultural community in the surrounding area and has few facilities for visiting yachts.  A yacht arriving here has the choice of a series of three rather rickety pontoons or a short length of quay immediately N of the tiny fishing boat harbour.  Shelter here is not good in the prevailing NW winds, which find their way up the three mile long inlet and cause an uncomfortable chop.  Amfilochia should therefore only be visited in settled weather.

There are no dangers in the approach.  A large fuel depot just outside the W entrance to the inlet is conspicuous on the approach.  However, at the head of the inlet there is a shoal patch with under 4.0 metres over it around 100 metres E of the commercial quay and a similar distance N of the town.  It is unlikely, though, that a yacht will proceed this far.

There are really just two options in Amfilochia.  Around 400 metres N of the commercial quay on the W side of the inlet a wavebreak pontoon has been installed, behind which is a series of three pontoons. The pontoons are rather flimsy and are currently shunned (unusually) even by most local boats in view of the poor shelter in the prevailing wind.  While there are a few laid moorings, these have been installed by local boat owners rather than via any systematic effort and their quality is therefore suspect.
 +

 +
A better and more secure option is to lie alongside the 100 metre length of quay immediately S of the pontoons, which is well supplied with bollards and also has several electricity and water stanchions (although only the electricity was working in May 2013).
 +

 +
In both positions shelter is not wonderful in the prevailing winds and berthing should be avoided with any fresh to strong NW or N winds (or even E as there is a fetch of a mile across the inlet).

There are several coves along the coast NW of Amfilochia, between the headlands of Ak Dhervisi and Ak Ayios Yeoryios, where a yacht can find shelter from the prevailing NW winds if well tucked into the shore. However, these should be avoided if there is anything E in the wind.  See Ambrakikos Gulf page for further details.
