Saronikos Gulf Cruising Guide

An online cruising guide for yachts sailing around the Saronikos Gulf.

Sattelite View of the Saronikos Gulf

The Saronikos Gulf (Σαρωνικός Κόλπος) or Saronic Gulf is the body of water of Athens and the playground of the Athenians. It is the most crowded area in Greece, full of large ships, fast ferries, motor cruisers, fishing boats, and sailboats. All the marinas are full with long waiting lists. It will be hard for a visiting yacht to find a berth here.

On the north of the gulf is the coast of Attika (coast of Athens) and to the west and south is the coast of the Peloponnese.

Weather and Winds

The weather in the gulf is like in the Aegean but less severe than in the Cyclades.

For details see Aegean Sea.

Currents & Tides

Both currents and tides are weak.

Approach and Navigation

Warning: Crossing the gulf from north to south you have to cross the shipping lanes. Cross them, if possible, vertically. Do monitor your VHF but most large ships, including ones of the Greek Navy, rarely respond to a hail.

Regional Radio Nets

  • Coast Guard - VHF channel 12
  • Weather - VHF channel 86
  • Olympia Radio - VHF channels 27, 28, and 88
