The beach resort of Srebreno is situated on the mainland coast of Croatia two miles NNW of the harbour of Cavtat and six miles SE of the port of Dubrovnik.  Except for Cavtat, it is the last berthing option for a cruising yacht before arriving at the border with Montenegro just over 20 miles SE.  A short walk E around the bay is the town of Mlini with a good range of shops and other facilities.  Visiting yachts can berth alongside on the large quay on the SW side of the bay of Srebreno (if there is space) or anchor off on the E side of the bay, clear of the numerous small craft moorings.  Shelter here is good in most conditions except with strong southerlies, which cause a considerable swell.

Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coastDuring early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially in the N Adriatic. It tends, however, to blow less strongly S of Zadar.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Shelter on the quay is good in all but strong southerly winds, when the swell becomes very unpleasant and potentially dangerous. Very strong N winds also cause an uncomfortable chop on the quay and you may be better off going stern-to using the anchor to hold you off.

Srebreno from SE

The beach resort of Srebreno is situated on the mainland coast of Croatia two miles NNW of the harbour of Cavtat and six miles SE of the port of Dubrovnik. Except for Cavtat, it is the last bearthing option for a cruising yacht before arriving at the border with Montenegro just over 20 miles SE.
