The island of Mauritius (L’île Maurice) is a small (2,040 sq kms), multicultural island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and southeast of the Seychelles. Mauritius also controls Rodrigues Island and the remote Agalega and Cargados Garayos (Saint Brandon) islands, with a total population of 1.2 million for the whole group.
Rodrigues, Mauritius, and Reunion are important stopping points for yachts crossing the Indian Ocean from east to west, with South Africa as a destination.

Weather
Tropical, modified by southeast trade winds; warm, dry winter (May to November); hot, wet, humid summer (November to May); Natural hazards : Tropical cyclones (November to April); but most cyclones usually occur from the end of December till March. Mauritius has only two seasons, winter and summer. There is not much temperature differences between the two seasons of the year. The climate on the central plateau is cooler than on the coastal areas. The West coast is much wetter and more humid than the East coast.

Entrance
Clearance must be done in Port Louis. Yachts may then move to Grand Baie if they wish but may have to return to Port Louis for outward clearance.
Clearing out of Mauritius requires that you purchase a customs clearance form from the Chamber of Commerce office in Port Louis. You must then buy the relevant stamps from the post office that will be affixed to the form by Customs.
Immigration
- The official Republic of Mauritius website provides an excellent, clear statement of visa requirements by nationality.
- Cruisers who arrive in Mauritius aboard a yacht (and leave on the same yacht), do not require a visa.
- Many nationals do not require visas. Depending on nationality, the length of stay allowed varies from 15 days to 3 months.
- Citizens of Algeria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Yemen, Afghanistan and Liberia, require a visa before travelling to Mauritius, even if only "in transit".
- To extend a stay beyond three months, you must apply for a visa in advance and provide good reasons for the extension.
Customs
- Firearms and ammunition MUST be declared on arrival.
- You are NOT allowed to import fresh fruit from Asia (east of 60°E -including India and Pakistan), sugar cane, plants and fresh vegetables.
- Personal medicinal drugs must be covered by a prescription. Scheduled drugs, such as tranquillisers, morphine and other strong painkillers require prior authorisation before import. (Be sure to declare these to Customs)
- PETS: An advance permit is required from the Ministry of Agriculture & Environment for all pets. A health certificate from the country of origin is also required. See the "Vet Services" section on the Ministry of Agriculture Website.
All pets aboard must be declared on arrival and must not be allowed ashore until cleared by Customs.
